We are OAIGNS #09262. Overeaters Anonymous Intergroup Nova Scotia is a registered OA service Board that serves various OA Groups within Nova Scotia and PEI*. We also serve virtual online groups that originated in our area. We are in Region 6. We meet to practice the 12 Steps and the 12 Traditions of Overeaters Anonymous guided by the Twelve Concepts of Service.
*We are presently working on changing our bylaws to reflect the meetings we serve.
So what is an Intergroup?
When several OA groups exist in a geographic area, they eventually realize there are functions they can perform better together than separately. Typically, intergroups/service boards form simply because they are the easiest, most efficient way of getting certain OA jobs done. They provide needed services with minimum of organization. These intergroups/service boards, composed of representatives from interested meetings , are directly responsible to those they serve.
Intergroup /service boards may manage administrative functions, such as meeting lists, hotlines, and websites, but their primary purpose remains the same as every other group or service body in OA – to carry its message to the compulsive overeater who still suffers (Tradition 5). This includes those suffering both inside and outside of OA. Intergroups are in a unique position to help those still suffering within OA. A few representatives working together on an intergroup/service board committee can organize recovery events, such as Unity Day, IDEA Day, retreats, and conventions, which may benefit large numbers of members.

Birth of NS Intergroup
Many years ago, two or more groups decided that in Nova Scotia they would form an Intergroup and OAIGNS was born. As a Service Body our primary purpose is the same as any service body in OA.
Along with those 2 groups, more within the area joined Overeaters Anonymous Intergroup Nova Scotia (OAIGNS). Members from the various groups within the OAIGNS serve in the different positions available within the Service body. The various duties provide the many ways that we can facilitate our primary purpose, which is to carry the message to all compulsive eaters.
OAIGNS does not have any other affiliations other than Overeaters Anonymous.
Tradition 9 states, “OA, as such, ought never be organized; but we may create service boards or committees directly responsible to those they serve.” OAIGNS is a service board which has many service boards within: an Executive Board, Service positions and various committees. This structure helps carry out tasks to provide a means to be able to spread the message.
We meet three times a year on the third Saturday of April, August and November. All who have a desire to stop eating compulsively are welcomed.
